The Division of Student Life supports student wellbeing. Yes, academics can be both enriching and demanding; however, what happens outside the classroom is equally important. From securing essential needs and stability to navigating the unknowns of college, life doesn’t always go the way we think it’s going to go. There are unexpected setbacks, detours, and challenges. At the same time, might those experiences strengthen us?
Student Life’s Case Manager, Steven Godfrey, offers to partner with students on their journey through the messiness of life. As a non-clinical licensed social worker, Steven can:
- Help navigate the unknowns of college life
- Connect with campus and community resources
- Uncover missing essential needs & securities
- Provide conflict coaching
- Talk, listen, and brainstorm next steps
- Offer student-centered advocacy, education, and consultation
- Work across campus with a variety of ideas that promote policies, programs, and services which improve the health and wellbeing of students
Steven is also involved in a handful of campus initiatives:
- Co-Chairs UMD’s Student Care Team, a committee collaboratively promoting student wellbeing and addressing situations that have the potential to be disruptive and/or threatening.
- Facilitates UMD’s Student Basic Needs Workgroup, a group committed to promoting student stability and empowerment through the strengthening of essential needs and securities.
- Oversees Champ’s Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry providing both fresh and shelf-stable foods for students to access as they need.
- Contributes to the Dialogue & Deliberative Inquiry Committee, a group of staff, faculty, and students working to bring growth out of conflict by choosing discussion and recognizing common ground across difference.
