At UMD, we place a priority on creating a positive and inclusive campus climate. Advancing equity, diversity, and social justice is a core value of our university and is a goal of the UMD Strategic Plan. We also strive to provide a welcoming environment that supports a sense of belonging for every member of our campus community. In addition, freedom of expression, fostering diverse views and opinions, and promoting civil debate form the foundation of our democracy, and are part of the treasured tradition of this country's public universities and of the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Sometimes these two things - advancing equity, diversity, and social justice and supporting freedom of expression - come into conflict and members of our campus community experience harm, especially those who are from marginalized communities. We recognize that harmful speech can negatively impact individuals and communities from across the political spectrum and social classes. UMD strongly condemns speech that promotes prejudice and discrimination. While we value dialogue in our community, we do not always support everything that is said or every viewpoint.
This website provides our campus with resources and tools to explore freedom of expression more deeply and helps advance our goals for an inclusive campus climate.
